Abstract

For the past 100 years, various types of reforms in grammar instruction have been carried out both overseas and in Japan. The focus was put on the question: accuracy or fluency, explicit or implicit instruction, communication or examination, and so on, but in the current English education, the relation between form, meaning and function is emphasized, and therefore task-based activities are said to work effectively. However, in order to instruct grammar in a limited hour, we need to devise a more efficient type of task-based activity, that is,‘ the use of selfexpression.’ What is important is to provide students with situations where they can use English more positively, not for teachers to use English all the time.
