Abstract

Since the 1980’s, the amount of students outside of Japan wanting to learn Japanese has increased, which has resulted in a diversification of study needs.Nowadays, Japanese language education is at a transition stage.During the time the writer was engaged in Japanese language education in September 2012, at a vocational university in China, there were many violent demonstrations all over China due to the Japanese government’s claim of Senkaku Island, and many Japanese-owned businesses, including shops and supermarkets, were destroyed, either by looters or fell victim to arson. Not only has this situation caused serious political or economic issues between Japan and China, it has also affected Japanese language education in China. Given this situation, many questions arise. What is the meaning of Japanese language education for a Japanese teacher in China? What is the role of the teacher? This paper will discuss the role of the Japanese teacher today with a focus on Japanese language education in China, and the history of Japanese language education.
